Awareness of girls and women with bleeding disorders
Meet Patrice

Hello!

by Patrice -- Ypsilanti, Michigan USA

I'm currently a manager of education at the National Hemophilia Foundation. I started my position in January, 2010.

I'm passionate about women's health and have spent many years working with women of all ages in various settings: inner cities, small towns and colleges. I'm a social worker and health educator by training, and have worked primarily in health education, teaching others about self-care and helping them to advocate for themselves in their lives. I've lived for a number of years now with a chronic illness and it's a real challenge to balance work, home life and my health needs, so I relate in a small way to the challenges women who have a bleeding disorder face every day.

I'm so inspired by the courage and tenacity displayed by the women I've met! I hope that I'll be able to make a difference by raising awareness of women who aren't yet diagnosed to seek treatment, and assisting with the education of health care providers about women living with bleeding disorders.

Although the NHF office is in New York City, I live with my family in Ypsilanti, Michigan. I have an office in my home, and travel about 50% of the time. I am an avid crafter and love to make mosaics, as well as do crafts with my step kids.

Women's Health and Bleeding Disorder Initiative
National Hemophilia Foundation

We are proud to announce our new women's health and bleeding disorder initiative

--Victory for Women with Blood Disorders, an endeavor that builds upon and expands the former Project Red Flag. With the assistance and expertise of volunteers on our education/outreach committee, public awareness committee, and the National Hemophilia Foundation's (NHF) Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC), the Victory for Women with Blood Disorders program will incorporate education, advocacy, and support for women diagnosed with a blood disorder as well as raising awareness among women who have not yet been diagnosed. In response to a needs assessment, our primary efforts will focus on reaching young women ages 18 - 25 years old, mothers of 13 — 18-year old daughters, and health and education professionals.

Victory for Women with Blood Disorders will be a comprehensive multilevel program that addresses all five levels of influence for health-related behavior:

  1. Individual (knowledge, attitudes, beliefs)
  2. Interpersonal (family, friends, peers)
  3. Institutional or organizational (rules, regulations)
  4. Community (social network, norms, standards)
  5. Public policy (policies and laws that regulate or support healthy outcomes)

The first step in developing a brand and preparing to launch a public awareness campaign has been to design the Victory for Women with Blood Disorders logo. We are working with NHF's marketing and communications department to create a web page for this program. We continue to provide resources and educational opportunities to help chapters expand their capacity to serve women. Those efforts will all be enveloped within this umbrella program.

We welcome inquiries and suggestions. click link==> Victory for Women
